Generation 4 (1971 to --)

The 4th generation of computers began when Intel developed the first microprocessor. In 1971 Intel developed the Intel 4004 chip which contained thousands of IC's and put all computer components (CPU, transistors, memory, input/output controls) onto a single IC chip. The microprocessor was pretty much a first generation computer that fit in the palm of your hand.

Microprocessors were used in everyday life and were put into appliances, electronics, radios, TVs, game, and more. The invention of the microprocessor and LSI (large scale integration) began the age of the personal computer. In 1981 the IBM invented the first computer made for home users the IBM PC 5150 and in 1984 Apple invented the Macintosh. The increased power of the PC allowed computers to form networks which led to the invention of the Internet. Other major advances during this period have been the Graphical user interface (GUI), the mouse, the laptop, handheld devices, and Windows!
